Scandals Surrounding El Chapo, Kate del Castillo & Sean Penn

This Netflix crime series also touches the involvement of actor Sean Penn, and the whole ordeal they went through when meeting with him.

The scandal about Del Castillo and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman came to light on January 9, 2016. This was after Rolling Stone magazine published the story that American actor Sean Penn wrote of the meeting he held with Chapo Guzman.

Through a statement released Wednesday, Netflix revealed that “When I Met the Chapo” will be released October 20.  It will be divided into three parts that will tell the artist’s version of what happened “with exclusive information and never seen before” material:

“This project will tell the beginning, the causes and the consequences of meeting with one of the most controversial figures in drug trafficking,” said the actress and executive producer of this project.

Discussing the Complex Politics Surrounding El Chapo

David Broome, the creator and executive producer of the El Chapo Netflix crime series, said he was excited to participate. He believes it’s the perfect example of “when truth is stranger than fiction.” It will be a story wrapped around a core of complex political and social issues of this notorious figure and famous prisoner.

Guzman’s desire to make his life into a movie was one of the causes that led to his capture.

The Mexican government extradited Guzman on the last active day of President Barack Obama’s stint as President of the United States on January 19. A court had rejected two safeguarding documents filed by the El Capo’s defense to avoid his extradition to the US, where he faces numerous charges.

He is still looking for legal means that will allow him to go back to Mexico.

In an interview with Efe last March, Del Castillo states she believes that the Netflix crime series is going to be a success and a completely new light on one of the most infamous men in the world. She now resides in Los Angeles for fear of legal reprisals in Mexico.

Similar to “Narcos” which tells the story of Pablo Escobar, El Chapo now has his own Netflix original series. Produced by Univision, it touches the human side of Chapo Guzman AKA El Chapo, as well as how he became a monster.

It includes El Chapo’s encounter with Pablo Escobar, and how he started escalating in the drug trafficking business. Starting off as a messenger and a transporter, he grew to be a powerful and unmatched criminal in Mexico.
